Google’s Novel Radial Menu for Android

Well, there’s no knowing what may be coming around the corner like this new and interesting apparatus by Google. It has certainly come up with some novel ideas and this one is no exception. A similar device by Samsung’s “Air Command” may have spurred the search engine giant to produce a menu of its own but with greater zest and details on a sub-menu component.

Google Patent Reveals

The invention of a radial menu is one of Google’s latest that incorporates a graphical interface for its users. It is circular in shape and has been configured to feature commands, options and functions that are automatically set into motion once the command button is selected and activated. Though circular in shape as already mentioned, the interface of the radial menu is divided within itself with each sector relating to a specific command, function or option selection.

Explanation

The main features of the radial menu comprise firstly the user’s graphical interface (#100) that provides a radial menu that may incorporate a single or multiple display sectors that can be identified from different sets of graphical elements. The elements may include a single button, a radio button, slider, drop down list and many more.

The touchscreen feature of the radial menu are clearly designated by three main states with #110 as the first stage, #120 as stage 2 and #130 as stage 3. The radial menu can be contextual in substance and its functioning is possible through the use of an operating system. It is configured to answer to a touch input by the user which will activate the menu by interacting with the user.

Patent Model Detail

For the first stage at #110, the user manipulates the menu with their thumb to fix the point as shown by a yellow point in the graphic display. The radius of the circular shaped radial menu can be determined by the user stretching out a finger on the touch screen. Its size on the other hand is predetermined by the size of the display that the user has in mind.

Operating the radial menu is not as complicated as first thought. It only involves the placing of a finger in the center of the menu, rotate the hand while simultaneously swiping a second finger in the direction of #117 alone or with the other path #119. By these motions the user will be able to choose a menu alternative in segments #120 or#106

The second stage or #120, the user’s second finger has moved from point #2 to #3 outside the radial menu circular form. Once the user’s second finger extends outside the GUI, it may extend further outwards beyond the area of the radial menu and find out whether or not a sub-menu will pop-up as depicted in #130.

The parts of the radial menu that should be noted for stage 3 are segments #120 coloured light blue and #104 coloured purple. These are segments configured in concentric circles and go beyond the immediate radial menu. It should also be noted that the radial menu and the sub-menu do not have the same display area with that for the sub-menu somewhat smaller than the original radial menu.

After this invention, it is difficult to hazard a guess as to what new device Google will invent next but it’s almost certain that once it has fully invented, tested and released the radial menu, it will cast its sights on other equally or more exciting inventions.
